UNKNOWN is one of the most useful states in research. It means the available evidence cannot currently decide the question. It does not make every explanation equal, and it does not authorize a preferred story. CP1 records why a question remains open, what evidence is missing and which test could reduce the uncertainty.

WHY IT MATTERS
False certainty hides error. Permanent mystery hides the work required to reduce uncertainty.

UNKNOWN CAN SHRINK
Better measurements, new sources, replication or a stronger model can convert UNKNOWN into a more resolved state.
UNKNOWN CAN RETURN
A correction, contradiction or new anomaly can reopen what appeared resolved.
